Te Kura o Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki is a new charter school led by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. Rangatahi will thrive in a kuraMāori, Full immersion Māori setting, in narratives, histories and aspiration of Ngāti Whātua, and go out into the world, ready.

The kura is scheduled to open during Matariki 2026, 20th July 2026.

The kura will initially cater for Year 9 and Year 10 ākonga, growing by one year level each year.

The kura will be based at 8 Tangihua Street, within the Te Tōangaroa precinct.

In its initial stages, the name, Ngāti Whātua ki Tāmaki encapsulated the purpose of the kura. To be inclusive and provide young people living in Tāmaki an opportunity to learn in a Ngāti Whātua-centric curriculum. This purpose still holds true today.

No. Because we are a Māori Medium kura, anyone can enrol even if you live outside of Ōrākei.

The kura is designed for rangatahi and whānau seeking a reo Māori, iwi-led education pathway grounded in Ngāti Whātuatanga.

Kāhore. Enrolment is open to any ākonga. If the ākonga and the whānau support our special character which is Ngāti Whātua-centric, Māori-Medium Education Pathway.

The kura is not a kura where the ākonga learns Te Reo Māori. Ākonga learn the curriculum through the medium of Te Reo Māori. A certain level of Te Reo Māori proficiency, or a willingness to learn in this environment. If your child is earlier in their reo Māori journey, and you are an uri of Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei, we can work with you to explore support and pathways that will prepare your child to engage in the kura.

Whānau will be supported through engagement opportunities, resources, and learning alongside their tamariki, recognising the importance of the home environment.

We are wanting to develop our uniforms with our ākonga and our whānau. For now, they are under development.
